Tijdens deze e-learning bespreken Prof. Bruyère en Prof. Gielen de behandeling van ernstige osteoporose bij postmenopauzale vrouwen. Het is nu vastgesteld dat deze populatie van patiënten die al een osteoporotische fractuur hebben gehad, een zeer hoog risico loopt op het presenteren van een nieuwe fractuur.
Prof. Bruyère presenteert de nieuwste aanbevelingen voor verschillende behandeling benaderingen, afhankelijk van het fractuurrisico, waarbij de paradigmaverschuiving voor de behandeling van patiënten met een zeer hoog risico op fracturen wordt benadrukt, evenals hulpmiddelen voor het beoordelen van het fractuurrisico.
Prof. Gielen presenteert een recente therapeutische optie voor de behandeling van ernstige osteoporose bij postmenopauzale vrouwen en benadrukt het belang van de volgorde van de behandelingen.

Evelien Gielen, MD PhD, is associate professor and head of the research line ‘Age-related osteoporosis and sarcopenia’ at the division Gerontology and Geriatrics, Department of Public Health and Primary Care at KU Leuven. She is also deputy Head of Clinic at the Geriatric department and supervisor at the Centre for Metabolic Bone Diseases in UZ Leuven.
Evelien Gielen is involved in several (inter)national scientific projects and working groups in the field of age-related osteoporosis and sarcopenia. Her main research activities focus on strategies to promote healthy ageing and to reduce fracture risk in the very old. For both her research projects on the effects of personalized non-pharmacological interventions for persons with sarcopenia and on the role of the gut microbiota in the development and treatment of sarcopenia, she received funding from the Research Foundation Flanders.
Evelien Gielen is the president of the Belgian Bone Club and treasurer of the Belgian Aging Muscle Society. She is one of the co-authors of the 2020 guidelines of the Belgian Bone Club on the management of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

Olivier Bruyère, Ph.D., is currently Professor of Clinical Epidemiology in the Department of Public Health Sciences and of Geriatric Rehabilitation in the Department of Rehabilitation and Sport Sciences of the University of Liège in Belgium.
He is head of the Research Unit in Public Health, Epidemiology and Health Economics in this University. Professor Bruyère is the Chief Executive Officer of the European Society on Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ESCEO), President of the Belgian Ageing Muscle Society (BAMS), General Secretary of the Belgian Bone Club (BBC) and member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF).
He was the Vice-President of the Human Nutrition working group at the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES). His main fields of interest are prevention, rehabilitation, nutrition and pharmaco-epidemiology related to geriatric or rheumatic conditions.
Besides being Editor-in-chief of the journal “The Archives of Public Health”, he is Associate Editor of “Aging Clinical and Experimental Research” as well as on the editorial board of various journals. He is author of more than 400 international scientific publications and book chapters.
